Constipation can be defined as those individuals who report an inablility to expel stool or a decrease in usual frequency.


Constipation in the person with cancer often has multiple causes. These include:
  • Decrease in dietary intake of fluid and fiber
  • Decrease in mobility and exercise
  • Bed rest
  • Changes in usual patterns of elimination and bowel routine
  • Pain medications
  • Chemotheraphy medication
  • Anti-depressants
  • Sleep inducing agents
  • Pre-existing laxative dependence


Prevention of Constipation:
  • Increase daily consumption of fiber (bran flakes, prunes, applesauce, raisins, whole grains and cereals, fruits and vegatables)
  • Increase daily consumption of fluids (6-8 glasses of fluid a day)
  • Regular exercise as tolerated
  • Daily us of stool softener while taking medications that cause constipation


Medications for Constipation:
The following over the counter preparations can be used to treat early constipation. (follow the manufacturer's directions)
  • Colace (generic acceptable)
  • Milk of Magnesia
  • Metamucil
  • Dulcolax suppository **(please call the office before using this product. If platelets or WBC's are low this would be contra-indicated and could cause serious infection or problems)


If you have had no results in 48 hours you may try the following if you are not experiencing nausea, vomiting or pain.
Senokot: two tablets at bedtime-repeat in AM if no results
Fleet enema: again if you have low WBC's or platelets please call the office before trying this product

Please feel free to call the office if the above is not working and you need furher assistance. If you do have any pain, nausea, vomiting or abdominal distension-please call the office immediately.
